There was a time when we didn’t think we could get behind a big name sunscreen. Luckily, those times are changing. The mainstream brands are finally ditching harsh chemicals and creating more natural sunscreens that protect our skin from both UVA and UVB rays without Paraben, PABA or oxybenzone.

Banana Boat Natural Reflect Kids Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50 was release in April 2013. It’s pediatrician-tested, water resistant and made from 100% naturally sourced sunscreen ingredients.

Unlike sunscreens that use chemical blockers such as oxybenzone and avobenzone to convert radiation to heat, the physical blockers used in Banana Boat’s Natural Reflect line don’t go penetrate the epidermis. “Sunscreens with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide used to go on white,” says Dr. Julia Carroll, a Toronto-based dermatologist. Physical blockers don’t have to go on heavy white any more. Banana Boat Natural Reflect is easy to rub into skin and not overly thick. It look just minutes to apply to our squirmy kids and there were no white streaks afterwards.

Plus you can get it at your local drug store and at $11.99 a tube it’s actually affordable.

Summer is a ton of fun, but it also comes with risks. Luckily, most of them are easily preventable. Here are the five best ways to keep your kids safe this summer.

KIDS SUMMER SAFETY TIPS:

1. Prevent Sunburns

Young skin is especially sensitive to the harsh sun. Here’s how to keep your child protected:

Limit their sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun’s rays are strongest.

Cover up with long-sleeved, tightly woven clothing and a broad-brimmed hat.

Apply children’s sunscreen liberally 15 to 30 minutes before going outdoors, even on cloudy days. [Click here for the latest on the safest kids’ sunscreens.]

Reapply every two hours or after swimming or getting wet.

Treatment: You can reduce the pain, swelling and discomfort of a sunburn with a nonprescription anti-inflammatory medication, cool compresses and an aloe vera lotion. But if they have a burn that blisters, you should take them to a doctor, says Dr. Sanjeev Sharma, an emergency physician in Toronto.

Well, sort of.

You can’t just run out and buy dad flowers for Father’s Day, and a six-pack of beer seems a little impersonal. So we love this idea for a Father’s Day tree. It’s a great way to get the kid’s involved in a craft dad will actually want to keep – and you will actually want to display.

You can download an outline of the tree seen here at The Crafting Chicks, or draw your own. Then dip your little one’s hands in green paint and have fun creating the leaves. It’s simple and oh so cute.

TIP: 11×14 paper is the ideal size for little hands.

Unless you’re rich, it’s challenging to load up your grocery cart with organic foods. That’s why we love the Environmental Working Group (EWG)’s yearly dirty

Apples are number one on the EWG hit list

dozen list, which lets us know which organic fruits and vegetables are worth paying extra for. This year, they couldn’t contain the list to 12 and had to add two extras. Lucky for our pocket books there are also 15 fruits and veggies that made their clean list.

Here’s a quick look at which foods are the highest and lowest in pesticides and chemicals and find out if organic foods are worth the cost . . .

Have you ever experienced parents yelling obscenities at each other? How about punishing their 10-year-old by making him run for miles in a weighted vest just to get home? Or parents who dish out monetary rewards for the slightest sign of excellence from their child?

If you’re answer is no, chances are you don’t have a son or daughter in minor league hockey. As crazy as these antics sound, they are par for the course for a great number of hockey parents. While researching my article Hockey Blight in Canada in the Winter 2013 issue of Canadian Family magazine I was truly shocked by the extent some hockey parents go to in the name of “support.”

Some parents truly believe that because they are investing a huge amount of time, energy and money in their child they should be repaid by a child that performs at an exceptional level at every game. If their kid doesn’t deliver, these parents feel they are entitled to deliver some form of punishment.

During my interviews I had a parent admit to driving over to the house of one of his son’s teammates after a game to confront the child’s mother, yelling: “Are you a lunatic to be yelling at my kid like that during a game?” Other parents admit to saying: ‘You can’t play with your friends until you show me that you want to be a hockey player.”

What is it that makes parents go to extremes about hockey? Does it happen in other sports too? You can check out the full article in the Canadian Family Winter 2013 issue.

Our thoughts are only ours until we share them. Once we take our ideas to the public, we lose all control – Mother’s Day is the perfect example.

Mother’s Day Origins

Mother’s Day was the creation of Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia (who ironically was never a mother herself). Her own mother Anna Reeves Jarvis started Mother’s Day work clubs in West Virginia during the 1850s to improve sanitary conditions and try to lower infant mortality by fighting disease and curbing milk contamination. In the postwar years Jarvis Sr. joined with other women to organize Mother’s Friendship Day picnics and a Mothers’ Friendship Day. The goal was to work for peace and provide time for women to mourn and remember fallen soldiers.

When Jarvis Sr. passed away her daughter Anna started the first official Mother’s Day on May 12, 1907 to promote friendship and health, and to remember the mother she loved. Within five years the holiday was observed across the United States and in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day official, naming the second Sunday in May a national holiday for moms.

Sadly Jarvis was furious with the commercialization of her day. Instead of looking for the potential good in garnering so much hype so soon she spent the rest of her life fighting against the commercialization of Mother’s Day. Jarvis organized boycotts, threatened lawsuits, and even attacked First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt for using Mother’s Day to raise funds for charities.

Although Jarvis inherited a large sum of money, she died penniless in a sanitarium in 1948 at the age of 84.
