Raising a Left-Handed Child

Is left-handedness genetic?

If your child is left-handed, chances are you’re not. Although there appears to be a genetic connection, researchers believe it is due to a variable gene pattern and is often not passed on from parent to child. So while being left-handed does slightly increase your chances of having a left-handed child, 75 percent of left-handers have two right-handed parents.

My left-handed daughter is talented, intelligent, confident and in no way hampered by being left-handed. Never try to “train” them to change to the right (like they did when I was at school) Encourage their unique ability.
Of course I tease her and call her “sinister” (right handers are called “dexter”)

My mom is left handed and my dad is right handed. I am left handed and my sister is Right handed. Both my husband and I are left handed but my husband is completely left handed. My mom and I do certain things right handed (she eats and I throw, bowl…I feel like my right side is stronger and my left is more of the “thinker side”….I write, eat, and play guitar left handed. I am a tennis player and my forehand is left handed and my backhand right handed.) We produced one right handed child and my three month old is showing signs of being left handed but she iS still too little to tell.

I am left handed and I have never seemed to notice my left hand causing me any issues. Actually while I was reading this article. I picked up a pair of scissors and held them in my left and with no issues. I have always plays baseball, bowling, shooting and all sorts of activities right handed. I am by no means ambidextrous. My son is 7 months old and seems to be favoring his left hand. lol. My husband isn’t too happy about it. He is calling him wrong handed. Which puts me in Mom ultra protective mode but that’s a whole different issue. I have always enjoyed being left handed except at dinner parties makes it hard sometimes. Personally I feel I have more talent in my left hand than my my husband has in is whole body. But that’s just the way I see it. I hope my son is left handed because its great!

god made each of us unique , whether we are right handed or left handed , or ambidextrous , if your child is left handed & you dont like it you should be grateful that your child has a hand period , that your child lived , that your child is healthy that your child is happy & so on ther are kids born with out & worse so its wrong to be upset or even try to change a child , they are worn unique by gods hand accept the gift you were give gracefully & thank fully
there are many things a million x worse than a left handed child & as you see they are more creative ect & lefties are happy with it

yes we live in a right handed world , & nuns used to hit lefties with rulers & lefties used to be thought of as a curse or sm thing very bad

some instances a left handed child was killed ,

guess what i am right handed , i have 2 rt handed kids & 1 left , i1 ambidextruos & looks like my daughter thats ambidextrous her daughter may be a leftie 16 months

accept what gods gives you & be thankfull it can be snatched away in an instant , devestation can happen in a moments time
we worry to much & dwell on what could of been too much instead of living for the here & now & being happy your healthy & alive & happy even left hannded or even if your child is left handed

My six year old grand daughter is left handed, when she writes her words she starts writing her word from the right side of the page to the left, although the word is spelt correctly the end result is her words are backwards, Very concerned nana.

I would check with your child’s teacher as soon as possible. She’s still so young and it’s best to correct these things early. Don’t worry, it’s not uncommon and it should be easy enough to have her writing left to right again in no time with a little direction.

Left handed people often slip into mirror writing flowing from right to left and perfectly readable to them. Dont be concerned Nana :)

My grandmother was left handed but back then this was wrong and her left hand was tied behind her back back. My father is a lefty, I am a lefty and my 6 year old daughter is also a lefty. Why so many in one family?
